I seem to recall learning in college that psychologically consumers are more inclined to purchase something for 99¢ than $1. Even though its only a penny cheaper- your brain thinks your getting a better deal. That's why everything is $5.99- and not $6. Houses, cars, hamburgers, coffee - all get sold with this mentality. It works. I guess we are all suckers.
